It is widely known that Google uses at least 200 factors to rank the websites in its search results. It is virtually impossible to know all of them but there are some main ones you can focus on that will be of significant help. In this article we have put a list of some of the main ranking factors.
1. Age of Domain
Google will take the age of a website into account when ranking your pages. The only exception is in news results where they need the newest results. The aim of this is to ensure only websites that are sticking around and are reputable businesses get the best rankings.
2. Internal Linking
This is a really important ranking factor and you should pay close attention to it. The more links you have to a page in your website the more important it appears to be to the search engines. This helps to not only spread your PageRank around but also get the most important pages on your website noticed by the search engines.
3. Outgoing Links
It is not a bad thing to have out going links but you need to make sure they are quality. The search engines will look at the pages you link to and if they are spam pages that will affect you. On the other hand if you link to top quality information sites that will benefit your users experience then that will add weight to the quality of your site and make you more important.
4. Content
There are a lot of things to consider in content. Probably the most important thing is that it is relevant, well written and interesting. This seems strange because how can a search engine interpret your content? However it can check the grammar and spelling as well as the readability. This means if you cram your keywords in and write your content badly you will be penalised.
There is also the need to update your content regularly. This does not mean rewriting your content all the time of feeling the need to add something to your home page daily as this will have little effect. However you should consider adding pages and more content regularly. If you check the top ranking websites you will see that they usually have a large number of pages and so you should definitely take this into account.
5. Link Popularity
It has been mentioned several times that the number of inbound links you have is really important however there is more to it than just volume. It is important to get your keywords in the anchor text of the link as this shows the search engines what your page is about. It is also important that the text around the anchor text is relevant as well. For example if you have a link with anchor text Electrical Supplies buy the text around it is about mortgages it will give less importance to the link.
Other important things in linking is the quality of the site that links to you and also how long you have had the link. This is why it is harder for new sites to rank highly as they only have new links which are yet to stand the test of time.
The above details is just a snippet of some of the factors you should be considering in your SEO campaign. If you get the above write you will be part of the way there.
